South African wines are changing thanks to these five brilliant winemakers (and others) | Britt on Forbes

Now is really the time to take a look at the South African wine scene. If you are mostly familiar with the easy going, inexpensive wines from this country, you will be surprised. Now much more attention is given to the terroir. To plant each grape in a suitable soil, to lower the yields and to pay attention to all details, these are the new rules for the ambitious wine producers. South Africa is a champion of low-cost wines but you don’t have to pay that much more to feel the difference. And it is worth it.

We travel often to the South African Winelands and every time we meet new, exciting winemakers and we discover wines that amazes us fort their drinkability and freshness. The wines from the South Coast net least. In Elgin, Bod River, Walker Bay and even further east along the coast, some very interesting wines from for instance sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and pinotage are made. But the classic regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek also have their share of innovation and desire to experiment.

Here’s the introduction to the Forbes article:

South Africa has some spectacular vineyards. Not to mention spectacular wines. A new generation of winemakers is now giving the world high quality, complex and exciting wines. Now is the time to discover, or rediscover South African wines.

We have several favorite places in the South African Winelands. Here are some of them where you can enjoy gorgeous views, great wines and, at some of them, also really good food.

What we like about these South African winemakers is their passion and talent for what they are doing. Their wines can be powerful and concentrated but they always have an amazing drinkability, a lovely freshness and restrained oak flavors.

Here are five South African wineries that we think you definitely should try, if you get the chance:

  • Stark-Condé
  • Springfontein
  • Gabriëlskloof
  • Reyneke
  • Glenwood
