The Wonderful World of Wine, From Grape to the Table

The world of wine is wonderful. It is full of grapes that grow in the most amazing landscapes and that are transformed into something that is the very best drink for a good dinner. If you think that food and wine are among the highlights of life, it is easy to become lyrical when you think of good wines. Wine is also closely linked to culture, history, geography and people. Wine makes us experience new things, discover other cultures, to travel. Covering all of the wonderful world of wine in a single book has been a challenge.

This book, “The Wonderful World of Wine” (number 11), tells you about “everything” about wine, from how to grow grapes to how to pair food and wine. The full title is “The Wonderful World of wine, from grape to the table; wine growing, wine countries, wine tasting, wine & food pairing”, by Britt & Per Karlsson.

It is intended for those who want to know more about wine, for those who first want to learn the basics but then want to go much further. It is just as suitable for those who want something easy to read, engaging and entertaining about the world of wine as for those who are looking for a fact-filled textbook about wine.

The book has won four prizes in Gourmand International, also called the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, the world’s biggest competition for food and beverage literature:

  • Gourmand Awards Sweden
    • First prize in the category “world wines”
    • First prize in the category “wine tourism”
  • Gourmand Awards International
    • Second prize, globally, in the World Wine category
    • Third prize, globally, in the Wine Tourism category

The book can be used as a textbook on an intermediate level wine course. It goes far beyond the basics of an introductory course. If you want to go further in-depth than this book, then you have to go to our other wine books which takes you a step further, and then supplement that with other specialized books on specific subjects.

“The Wonderful World of Wine” takes you a long way on the path to knowing more about wine.

It is the only modern Swedish wine-course coursebook (it is currently only published in Swedish) with completely updated facts, which describes today’s wine world.

The book takes you on a journey through almost all the world’s wine countries, where we go into depth as much as possible in the limited format. The material for the book comes to a large extent from our own wine tours in wine regions. We have visited the majority (though not all) of the countries we describe and met and discussed with thousands of winegrowers.

We explain wine-growing in the vineyard, discuss all the major grape varieties in the world (and many of the not so famous ones too), the importance of climate and soil. We explain what the wine producer and winemaker does in the wine cellar to “make” wine, the harvest, fermentation, “additives”, and much more.

The history of the wine is also included, with its most essential elements (although we avoid details of what the Phoenicians did here and there at their coastal crashes). We focus instead on the important evolutions in the development of the wine, right up to the present day.

Combining food and wine is a topic that is much discussed today. In a simple and straightforward way, we explain the most important things to keep in mind to be successful. It is not a complicated science but more about having the right feeling and about some simple principles.

The book also gives you advice and guidance on how to develop your talent for tasting wine. Again, this is not a complicated process but is about tasting, thinking and expressing in words.

“The Wonderful World of Wine” is an indispensable guide for those who want more to enjoy wine and food.

This is what the publisher says about the book:

“The world of wine is wonderful” is already announced in the preface to this new “complete” book about most things that have to do with wine. “It is full of grapes that grow in the most amazing landscapes and turn into something that is the very best drink for a good dinner.” That is the encouraging prelude to this engaging, insightful and broad introduction to the world of wine.

Here, “everything” about wine is treated in a single fully-loaded volume – handy enough: wine countries and wine regions, grape growing, grape varieties, climate and soil, vinification, organic and biodynamic wine and much more. 41 countries are presented; Britt and Per Karlsson have personally visited 29 of them. They have met dedicated growers and unforgettable winemakers, discussed and tasted, tested food and different wines in combination, noted the influence of culture.

They notice differences and similarities between continents, countries, regions and individual winemakers. They have seen with their own eyes and proven sense of taste how things change and how the wine world is evolving: “The wine world is very different today than it was twenty years ago.”

“The Wonderful World of Wine” is a generously illustrated volume about an enticing world. You cannot have better cicerones and sharing their vast knowledge than Britt and Per Karlsson.

The book is just as suitable for those who want an enjoyable and easy-to-read overview of the world of wine as for those who take a wine course and need a fact-filled in-depth text.

Britt and Per Karlsson are among Sweden’s most published and respected wine book authors, living in Paris since many years. They have previously published some ten books about the world of wine. Several of them have won prizes, both Swedish and prestigious international awards. Together, the couple runs BKWine with wine tours and the publication of an English and Swedish wine newsletter, and they write for Forbes.com. Britt and Per are also often asked to participate in international wine competitions as jury members.

The book was published in September 2021.
