But to tell the truth, Bolivia does produce ”real” wine too since a long time back. Unfortunately we have not (either…) had the opportunity to taste their wines. Since a few decades back they are trying to develop the wine production towards a quality profile. The vineyards are located near the Argentinean border at altitudes of between 1600 and 2850 metres! In total there are some 2000 ha (less than half of Chablis), planted with varieties such as malbec and cabernet sauvignon. Producers like Kohlberg and La Concepcion are spearheading the development.

  1. Please share some more info on wine in Bolivia. Are US wines currently imported?

  2. Bolivia mostly consumes local wine which are produced in Tarija. There are few imports, but mostly from Chile or Argentina not US.
The biggest players in the game are actually Campos de Solana and Kolbergh, but the vox populi in Bolivia dictates that the best quality are Campos de Solana who offer premium wines such as Coleccion de Altura and a Trivarietal:cabernet, merlot, malbec. They are also the ones with the most medals internationally.

The wine industry is still young in Bolivia, but it should be watched closely because the higher the altitude, the stronger aroma and taste of the fruit- and these are the highest wines in the world.

Varieties that are produced in Bolivia include, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet S., Cabernet R., Muscat and many more.
