Paris 1er

Lavinia

3-5, bd de la Madeleine, 75001 Paris, ph 01 42 97 20 20, open Mon-Sat 10.00-20.00
One of Paris' biggest wine shops, if not the biggest. Very broad range of French and international wines. A special section on bio-dynamic wines. Sometimes a touch expensive (what would you expect with this address?). They also have a restaurant and wine bar (see that section).

Paris 2e

Legrand

1, rue de la Banque, 75002 Paris

Very good all-round selection. Worth having a look at the shop itself. Recently changed owner and has, if anything, improved since. Newly opened wine bar and shop for wine paraphernalia and books.

Paris 3e

Arômes et Cépages

Le Marché des Enfants Rouges, 33 bis, rue Charlot, 75003 Paris

20030615_1_001720030615_1_0028Arômes et Cépages is a new wine shop that is located inside the Marche des Enfants Rouges (intersection of rue de Bretagne and rue Charlot). They have a very good selection of organic or bio-dynamic wines. Many of the producers who are starting to establish a name (or have already done so) are there: Marcel Richaud (Cotes du Rhone), Domaine Rimbert (Coteaux du Languedoc), Domaine Coupe-Roses (Minervois), Domaine de Montgilet (Anjou), etc. An interesting address if you look for wine that is good value, not from Bordeaux or Burgundy, and that happen to be organic. See also pictures from their Foire aux Vin here.
(Brief nr 3)

Paris 4e

Cave Estève

10, rue de la Cerisaie, 75004 (close to Bastille). Second shop at 292, rue St Jacques, 75005 Paris (close to Pantheon)

Good selection from smaller and less well known growers and districts. Jean-Christophe Esteve has an impressive network of suppliers. Saturday tastings sometimes.
(Brief nr 4)

Les Caprices de l’Instant

12, rue Jacques Cœur, 75004 Paris (métro La Bastille), ph 01 40 27 89 00

A particularly good selection from south-west France (Madiran, Cahors, Gaillac etc). But overall a good list.
(Brief nr 3)

Paris 6e

La Maison des Millesimes

137, bd Saint-Germain, 01 40 46 80 01. Also in Bordeaux : 37, rue des Lois, 33000 Bordeaux, 05 56 44 03 92, and a new shop in St Emilion, Place Pioceau. www.jackswines.com. Open 10.00-22.00 every day except Sun when they close at 19.00!

Rather unexpectedly, on one of Paris’ fashion boulevards you find this wine shop. It has only Bordeaux, split in three different sections: 1) the top crus (Mouton, Lafite, Margaux etc), 2) at least one wine from every vintage going back to, well, a long time back, so if you need that one bottle for the anniversary…, and 3) older vintages of (more) affordable wines where they have a few more bottles of each. Example: Château Tour de Beauregard 1981, six bottles @ 19€ each. And with consumer friendly opening hours!

Paris 7e

Les Grandes Caves

70, rue Saint-Dominique, 75007 Paris, ph 01 47 05 69 28

A place to go to find the wines from the small producer that you have read about but can not find anywhere. Competent staff. Riesling from Pierre Frick, Château des Tours (Cotes du Rhone from the owner to Château Rayas), Viognier from Domaine de Moulines etc.

Paris 8e

Les Caves Taillevent

199, rue Faubourg-St-Honoré, 75008 Paris, www.taillevent.com

Excellent all-round selection. Not as expensive as the name sounds. Special "bio-dynamic" list.

(Brief 10)

Paris 9e

Galeries Lafayette – Lafayette Gourmet

boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris, 01 48 74 15 35

A department store is not the first place to think of when it comes to buying wine. But the wine shop at GL has an exceptional selection. And even a penchant for biodynamic producers.
 (Brief nr 1)

Tchin-Tchin!
39, rue des Martyres, 75009 Paris, 01 40 16 80 27. Other address in Paris 1er.
A small shop that you might just miss or choose not to enter because of it's rather ugly decoration... But that would be a mistake! A very good selection of wines primarily from three areas: 1) the Loire valley, 2) Languedoc-Roussillon, and 3) Rhone. Plus a good selection of foreign wines and a special section of  wines between 2.50€ and 6.50€! Some recommendations: Amphibolite 2001 Muscadet (7.60€ - a Muscadet that you should try!), Domaine du Closel and Jo Pithon also from the Loire valley, Jean-Paul Brun's Terres Dorées Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Beaujolais (9.70€ and 12.80€ respectively - see BKWine Brief Nr 1 for details), Domaine de la Prose Cadieres 2000 from Languedoc (10.80€), Marcel Richaud's Cotes du Rhone Cuvée les Garrigues (9.60€), Seppi Landmann Sylvaner Alsace (7.30€)... And how nice to see someone with consumer friendly opening hours!
(Brief 8)

Paris 12e

Les Ultra-Vins

16, rue Lacuée, metro Bastille

A small shop with a quite interesting selection wich is certainly well worth discovering if you are in this part of town: 2001 Pinot Noir from Jean-Paul Brun, Terre Dorée (9.90€), Faugères Léon Barral 2000 (9€), Savennières Domaine Closel, Clos du Papillon 1989 (20.78€), various wines from Clos Tue-Boeuf, one of the bio-dynamics in Touraine, Le Casenove from Roussillon 1996 and 1998, Cahors Triguedina, Prince Probus 1994 (28.50€), 1995 (29€), 1996 (27€), and more affordable Ferrer-Ribièr cuvée Vignes 121 ans Carignan, VdP Catalan 1998 (9.60€)

Paris 14e

Inno-Montparnasse

Situated just opposite to the train station Montparnasse. Rather a luxury version of Monoprix department store. Very good both food and wine range, with even some non-French wines.

Paris 15e

Le Nez Rouge

11 r Alexandre Cabanel, 75015 Paris, métro Cambronne, 01 47 34 87 40

One of the few wine shops in Paris with a good selection of foreign wines. They are also good at smaller, not-so-well-known French producers. Try for example Domaine de Triennes. www.le-nez-rouge.com
 (Brief nr 1)

La cave à millésimes

180, rue Lecourbe - 75015 Paris, métro Vaugirard

A source for older vintages.

See same shop in Paris 7e.

Paris 18e

Les Grandes Caves

See same shop in Paris 7e.

Paris Other

Repaire de Bacchus

30 shops all over Paris, e.g. Cité Berryer on 25, rue Royale. A bit like Nicolas but much more interesting selection of wines.

Boulogne-Billancourt (92)

Vins & Cie

47 rue Escudier, 92100 Boulogne, ph 01 46 03 00 18 (open 10.00-13.00 and 16.00-20.00 except Sun PM and Monday).

Do you ever go to Boulogne to buy your wines? No? Well, you should try it. It’s a small shop but with a good selection, including some Italian wines. Many good Southern French wines: Domaine du Nouveau Monde in Languedoc (4.20 € and 8.70 for cuvée prestige); Domaine Brana in Irouléguy (16.77 € for the ‘97); Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage 2001 (16.90 €); Domaine Courbis Saint-Joseph Les Royes 1997 (17.22 €). And you can also find the excellent rosé from Clos d’Alari in Provence for € 7.20 (the red is sold out).
(Brief 2)

Bordeaux

Cousin et Compagnie

place du Parlement, 2 rue du Pas-St-Georges, 33000 Bordeaux, open 7/7, 16.00 to22.00, ph 05 5601 2023, www.cousin.fr, info @ cousin.fr.

Nice

Vin sur Vin

18 bis rue Biscarra, Nice, ph 04 93 92 93 20

2003q1-K722-0016An extensive selection from all of France with a predominance of the new stars from Southern France, but surprisingly few wines from Provence (!). Also (mainly) a wine bar and restaurant.
(Brief 2)

Nîmes

Caves du 41

41, rue Emile Jamais, 30900 Nîmes, tel 04 66 36 20 36.
If you are in the Nîmes region don’t miss a visit to this excellent wine shop! At Caves du 41 you can find a wealth of wines from the south of France – from cheap the very expensive. You can even find some wines that you can’t even buy from the producers.

Brussels

Vins & Compagnie

511, chaussée de Waterloo, 1050 Bruxelles, ph 02 346 91 40.

A small shop (but unrelated to the one in Paris as far as I know) where you are wise to ask for assistance to get some overview of what’s on offer. Ask friendly Paul van Dievoet who has a good selection of both French and other wines. Some “summer wines” I recommend: Schieferterrassen from Heyman-Löwenstein (11.80 €, with a touch of residual sugar – try it for aperitif or with salmon), red Rhône: Domaine de l’Oratoire St-Martin in Cairanne and somewhat less expensive: ”Cuvée Les Galets” from Vignerons d’Estézargues (4,80 €).
(Brief 2)

Mig’s World Wines

Chaussée de Charleroi 43, 1060 Brussels (close to Place Stéphanie), ph 02 534 77 03

Almost exclusively non-French wines, mostly from the New World. Big selection and some very good wines: Petaluma and Michelton from Australia, Te Mata from New Zeeland, Hamilton Russel and Kanonkop from South Africa, Geyser Peak and Diamond Creek from California.
(Brief 4)

Le Fief des Vins

Rue August Snieders, 23, 1030 Bruxelles (nära Gare de Schaerbeek), ph 02 244 96 50, www.fief-vins.com

A young couple runs this shop with a good selection bused on their personal contacts with growers (some are bio-dynamic): Clos du Tue Bouef and Domaine de la Mabillière in Loire, Yvon Métras in Beaujolais, Domaine de Gramenon in the Rhône valley and Domaine Christian Baillat in Corbières.

Rob – Le Marché des Vins

Bd de Woluwe, Brussels

Skip the ground floor luxury grocery store and go downstairs to discover the very well stocked wine department.

Chemin des Vignes

Chaussée d’Alsemberg 640, 1180 Bruxelles, ph 02 345 93 35, open Tue-Sat.

They specialise in French wines with a good selection of the classics. Some special recommendations: red Burgundy from Lucien Muzard in Santenay, very good value at between 15 and 18 euro. Also a very good and full-bodied Savennières from Château de Varennes for 12 euro.

(Brief 8)
