Experience Portugal, the Wine Country

with BKWine

Wine Tour to Portugal, October 18-22

Example of past tour

Portugal is still nice and warm in the middle of October! And it is also one of the most exciting wine countries in Europe today. Join us on this long weekend starting Wednesday evening 18th of October in Lisbon. After a good nights sleep in the beautiful hotel Veneza*** on the Avenida da Liberdade in central Lisbon, we are off in the morning of Thursday the 19th to our first visits in the region of Setúbal where we will spend the day. Late afternoon we arrive in the lovely historical town of Evora in the Alentejo region. Alentejo is known not only for its wines but also for its vast cork oak forests. Alentejo is today the up and coming wine region in Portugal. A lot of investments are being made and there’s an incredible enthusiasm. We will spend two days here and we will visit some very interesting wineries.

Programme (subject to changes)

All visits will be in English.

Wednesday October 18 - arrival

You arrive in Lisbon any time you like and check in at the Hotel Veneza.

For those of you who arrive early we propose to meet at 6 PM at Sala Ogival, a wine tasting place where it is possible to taste wines from several regions of Portugal (this is not part of the “official” program).

After that you will have the possibility to explore Lisbon and the many restaurants, at your leisure.

Thursday October 19 – Setúbal & Terras do Sado

After breakfast our bus will pick us up at the hotel and we are off to the peninsula of Setúbal, just south of Lisbon.

11.00 - José Maria da Fonseca

Visit to the wine estate of José Maria da Fonseca, one of the biggest and most well known in Portugal. They make the famous Periquita but also some very exciting and high-quality wines as well as the outstanding sweet Moscatel de Setúbal.

Lunch in a restaurant in the small picturesque village of Azeitão.

15.00 - Bacalhoa Vinhos

In the afternoon we will visit Bacalhoa Vinhos de Portugal. This wine producer changed names 2005, from JP Vinhos . They make wines in all price categories, many of them very good with a great deal of concentration. The winery is impressive.

Evora

After this visit we will continue to the small UNESCO-protected town, declared World Heritage site, of Evora in Alentejo (about 100 kilometres). We will stay for 2 nights in the beautiful Hotel de Cartuxa****.

The evening is yours to explore the picturesque and historical Evora.

Friday October 20 – Alentejo (Estremoz)

09.30 - Herdade das Servas, Estremoz

A very quality conscious producer. A beautiful and modern estate of approximately 200 hectares.

11.30 - J P Ramos

Visit to J P Ramos outside of Estremoz. João Portugal Ramos is one of the most famous Portugese wine makers and his wines are selling successfully all over the world.

Lunch at the wine estate of J P Ramos.

15.00  - Quinta do Carmo

Visit to Quinta do Carmo, owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild since 1992. Here we will find a mix of Portuguese tradition and the modern knowledge of the Rothschilds and also a mix of Portuguese and French grape varieties. Overall an interesting blend of Portuguese and French tradition and wine making.

In the evening you continue to explore Evora at your leisure.

Saturday October 21 – Alentejo (Reguengos de Monsaraz & Beja)

09.30 - Herdade de Esporão, Reguengos de Monsaraz

A very big wine estate, where millions of euro have been invested both in equipment and new plantings. Over ten years they have managed to become one of the most impressive domains of Portugal. The wine maker is from Australia so the wines are an exciting mix between the new and the old world.

12.00 - Herdade da Malhadinha Nova

Visit and lunch at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, south of Beja

A small and new estate of 18 hectares with potential to become a leading estate in Alentejo and in Portugal as a whole.

16.30 - Herdade do Peso, Pedrogão

A big and extremely well-run estate, owned since 1992 by Sogrape, Portugals biggest wine producer

After that we return to Lisbon where we will arrive around 9 p.m. You will stay again at Hotel Veneza and you will have time for a last dinner in Lisbon.

Sunday October 22

Departure.
