Wine Tour to Bordeaux

October 11 - 15

EXAMPLE

040916-131-3151040918-136-3669040918-136-3662040916-131-3191

For a wine lover a trip to Bordeaux is a must! Here you find not only world famous châteaux and world famous wines but also a lot of new exciting initiatives (They may not be so famous but they maybe more important for the future of Bordeaux!) from young enthusiastic wine makers. On this trip we will visit both large, famous Grand Cru Classé-châteaux and smaller ones that are less known, but very quality conscious. We will visit the well-known regions of the Médoc and Saint-Emilion, and also two of the rising-stars among the sub-regions, Entre-deux-Mers and Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. We will learn about viticulture and wine making and after this trip you will have a much better understanding of current developments in the Bordeaux wine region.

040917-133-3396We will stay four nights in the city of Bordeaux, an elegant and very beautiful city of just over half a million people. In the evenings you will have the possibility to explore Bordeaux, the sights and the many restaurants, at your leisure.

We will meet up in the hotel in Bordeaux during the evening of October 11th (only if you have already arrived - not "officially" part of the tour). The TGV train is just three hours from Paris. There is also an International Airport nearby with a shuttle service to Bordeaux itself.

On Thursday morning the 12h of October, the bus will pick us up for our first visits in the vineyards. The tour will end after breakfast on Sunday 15th of October.

The Programme

About the wine estates we visit

050527-203-0376We want you to experience the best and the most interesting. We put a lot of effort into finding really good producers to visit. Often, contrary to what one might think, the most exciting wine producers are not the "famous names". The passionately engaging visits happen when you meet the winemaker or the owner himself (or quite often herself) and his family, and start discussing and und understanding how things "work". And maybe even have lunch at the winery (and it is not like in the US where many wineries have restaurants). That's also why this trip does not have a large number of visits on the programme. But even so, we often run short of time, since when you start discussing with the winemaker, and tasting more and more of his wines, time flies.

The trip is a mixture of small family producers and larger, well known wine estates - carefully selected to give you the unique wine experience.

All visits are not finalised at the time of publishing the programme since we continuously work on improving it. But don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or if you want more details.

A quick look at the programme.

Arrival in Bordeaux

Thursday October 12 - Médoc

050526-200-0059The whole day in Médoc. The bus will take us through the villages of Margaux, Saint-Julien, and Pauillac to Saint-Estèphe seeing many beautiful châteaux on the way. We will visit three of them, and have lunch at one.

Preliminary visits

Château La Paloumey– Haut Médoc Cru Bourgeois Supérieur

050526-202-0220Lunch at Château Kirwan, Margaux 3ème Grand Cru Classé 1855

Château Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac 2ème Grand Cru Classé 1855

Friday October 13 - Saint-Emilion/Pomerol

On the other side of the rivers Garonne and Dordogne are Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. The châteaux are smaller than those in the Médoc but the landscape is prettier with more rolling hills and green forests. It is in this region the most expensive wines in Bordeaux can be found. We will visit 2 very interesting producers and will have time for a stroll through the picturesque medieval town of Saint Emilion.

Preliminary visits:

050527-204-0404Château Belair, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Emilion

Clos de la Vieille Eglise, Pomerol

Saturday October 14 - Entre-deux-Mers, Premières Côtes etc

Between the rivers, in Entre-deux-Mers, the quality of wines is getting better and better. Also, here you can afford to buy them! Look for superb wines under simple appellations like Bordeaux Supérieur, but of course, you have to know where to look! This is one of the places in Bordeaux where it pays to know exactly where to go, and when you do, value for money is assured. We will visit two of the “new wave” châteaux here and have lunch at a third.

Preliminary visits:

050528-207-0701Château de Reignac, Bordeaux Supérieur

Château de Haux, Première Côte de Bordeaux, with lunch at the chateau and wines from the property

Château de Nairac, Sauternes

Sunday October 15
