Champagne, Chablis and Burgundy

3 Classic French wine regions!

May 17–21

030903-2-k839-0021031122-1-k605-0004030926-1-k298-0015

This trip will take you from Paris to three of the most famous French wine regions: Champagne, Chablis and Burgundy. In just a few days you will get to taste and learn about some of the top French wines!

We will meet in Paris at the Gare de Lyon train station (centrally located in Paris) on Wednesday afternoon May 17. The bus will take us from Paris, first to Reims in Champagne, where we will stay one night and then continue the next day to Chablis where we will also stay one night. The following day we will continue down to Beaune, in the centre of Côte d’Or, the heart of Burgundy, where we will stay for two nights. After breakfast on Sunday morning May 21 we will leave Beaune and head back to Paris, arriving at around 1 PM on Sunday May 21.

The wines of Champagne don’t need an introduction. On this trip you will get the opportunity not only to taste a number of most interesting champagnes but you will also get to meet the people behind the wine and learn about how champagne is made – few wines need so much work and effort to make as champagne. The more you learn about Champagne, the more you will appreciate and enjoy it.

Among French top quality white wines, Chablis is in a class of its own. It’s freshness and purity is unique and famous all over the world, but it is also a wine with a wide range of styles, from refreshing quaffing wines to some of the most sophisticated wines in France. You will discover a number of different Chablis wines and of course taste them.

In Côte d’Or, the “golden slope” of Bourgogne, the wines are sometimes, literally, worth their weight in gold. Here it is “le terroir” that is really fundamental and in no other district has the soil been analysed to such an extent and classified in so much detail as in it’s numerous appellations. Leaving there you will have a good understanding as to why.

The Programme

About the wine estates we visit

040517-1-111-CRW_1161_JFRWe want you to experience the best and the most interesting. We put a lot of effort into finding really good producers to visit. Often, contrary to what one might think, the most exciting wine producers are not the "famous names". The passionately engaging visits happen when you meet the winemaker or the owner himself (or quite often herself) and his family, and start discussing and und understanding how things "work". And maybe even have lunch at the winery (and it is not like in the US where many wineries have restaurants). That's also why this trip does not have a large number of visits on the programme. But even so, we often run short of time, since when you start discussing with the winemaker, and tasting more and more of his wines, time flies.

The trip is a mixture of small family producers and larger, well known wine estates - carefully selected to give you the unique wine experience.

All visits are not finalised at the time of publishing the programme since we continuously work on improving it. But don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or if you want more details.

What you can expect from the programme:

Wednesday May 17

16.00 (4 PM) Departure by coach from Paris Gare de Lyon (75012 Paris). The Gare de Lyon has easy access from airports, city centre hotels and other railway stations.

After a 2-hour drive we will reach Reims, the capital of Champagne. In the evening you will have time to explore the city on your own, to visit its world famous cathedral, its wine bars and restaurants.

Thursday May 18

030926-3-k294-0013Champagne

During the morning we will visit two of the most interesting Champagne producers, having lunch (with champagne of course) at a Champagne House in the Côte des Blancs. This is the areas famed for its high-quality “Grand Cru” Chardonnay-grapes.

In the afternoon we will depart for Chablis arriving in the late afternoon. Once again the evening is free for you to explore on your own. Even though Chablis is a small town with only 2000 inhabitants, there are a number of good restaurants, from simple bistro style to one-star gastronomy.

Friday May 19

040923-141-4107Chablis

We will visit two high-quality producers in Chablis (Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard and Domaine Pascal Bouchard) where you will have also the possibility to buy their wines. Lunch (with wine) is included.

In the afternoon we will depart for Beaune, not only famous for its wines, but also for the beautiful Hôtel Dieu, built in 1438. We will be staying here for 2 nights..

Saturday May 20

040422-2-CRW_0355_RJBurgundy - Côte d’Or

Saturday, we will start the day by going north to the vineyards of Côte de Nuits, passing the famous villages of Aloxe-Corton, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Gevrey-Chambertin. After a visit to a quality conscious but small, independent family grower in Côte de Nuits (name to be confirmed) we will visit Domaine d’Ardhuy, on the border between Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, having lunch at this beautiful estate, situated in the middle of the vineyard of Clos des Langres.

After lunch we will visit the Côte de Beaune, passing through the villages of Pommard, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet… and calling in on one or two growers on the way, returning to Beaune in the early evening, where you can continue to explore the town, or more Bourgogne wines, on your own.

Sunday May 21

Departure for Paris after breakfast, arriving in Paris - at the Gare de Lyon - around 1 PM.
