For
a wine lover a trip to Bordeaux is a must. In Bordeaux you find world
famous châteaux with fabulous wines but also a lot of new exciting
initiatives (less famous but maybe more important for the future of
Bordeaux) and young enthusiastic wine makers. On this trip we visit some
big, famous Grand Cru Classé-châteaux as well as smaller less well
known, but very quality conscious estates. We explore key regions like
Médoc and Saint-Emilion, but also rising-stars, such as Entre-deux-Mers
and Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. We learn about viticulture and
vinification and after this trip you will be fully up to date with all
that is going on in Bordeaux at the moment.
We
stay four nights in Bordeaux, an elegant and very beautiful city. In the
evenings you will have the opportunity to explore Bordeaux, the sights and the
many restaurants, at your leisure.
Our tour starts in Bordeaux on Wednesday evening June 6th. Bordeaux, is easy
to reach; only 3 hours away from Paris by TGV-train.
The preliminary program
Wednesday June 6
Arrival in Bordeaux
Thursday June 7
Médoc
We spend the day in Médoc. Our bus takes us through Margaux, Saint-Julien and
Pauillac and up to Saint-Estèphe, en route there are many beautiful châteaux, we
will visit a few of them, and have lunch at one.
Preliminary visits:
Château La Lagune – Haut Médoc Grand Cru Classé 1855
Lunch at Château Margaux 3ème Grand Cru Classé 1855
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Saint Julien 2ème Grand Cru Classé 1855
Friday June 8
Saint-Emilion/Pomerol
On the other side of the rivers Garonne and Dordogne you find Saint-Emilion
and Pomerol. Here the châteaux are smaller than in Médoc and the landscape
prettier, more rolling hills and green forests. This area produces some of the
most expensive wines in Bordeaux. In addition to visiting two very interesting
producers we also have time for a stroll around the picturesque medieval town of
Saint Emilion.
Preliminary visits :
Château Grâce Dieu les Menuts, Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé (visit and
lunch)
Château Gaillard (where we will meet the dynamic owner and winemaker
Catherine Papon Nouvel).
Saturday June 9
Entre-deux-Mers
and Graves/Pessac-Léognan
Between the rivers, in Entre-deux-Mers, the quality of wines is improving all
the time, and here you can afford to buy them. You can find superb wines under
simple appellations like Bordeaux Supérieur, if you know where to look. This is
one of the places in Bordeaux where it pays to know exactly where to go, and
when you do, value for money is assured. We visit two of the “new wave” châteaux
here. Our wine tour ends in Pessac-Léognan, the well known area within Graves,
where you find superb red and white wines.
Preliminary visits:
Château Thieuley, Bordeaux Supérieur
Château Reignac, Bordeaux Supérieur
Château de la France, Pessac-Léognan
Sunday June 10
Departure.
About the wine estates we visit
We
want you to experience the best and the most interesting Bordeaux has to
offer so we put a lot of effort into finding really exciting producers
to visit. Contrary to what one might think, the most exciting wine
producers are not always the "famous names". The most passionately
engaging visits often occur when you meet the winemaker or the owner
himself (or quite often herself) and start discussing how things really
"work”, maybe even taking the time for lunch at the vineyard. We
deliberately don’t schedule a large number of visits on our tour as we
find that often we run short of time because we tend to get involved in
a deep discussions and end up tasting more and more wines then we
originally intended.
The trip is a mixture of small family producers and larger, well known
wine estates - carefully selected to give you a unique wine experience.
All visits are not finalised at the time of publishing as we are
continuously working on ways to improve our tours. Please don't hesitate
to contact us if you have any questions or if you want more details.
