Torres in Penedes, Catalonia, Spain

Miguel Torres in Vilafranca del Penedes
Miguel Torres is no doubt the most well know wine producer in Catalonia if not in all of Spain. He has developed a wide range of wines that use the different grape varieties and different micro climates in Penedes. But he is also a fervent supporter of traditional Catalonian grape varieties. He has more than 1000 hectares planted with many different varieties, both Spanish and "international". His wines from Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon have been hugely successful. The winery is one of the most modern (and biggest) there is.

The tractors or lorries that deliver the grapes at the Torres winery pass this device. It is a "probe" to take a sample of the grape must and verify the quality. It is pushed down into the grapes on the tractor and collects a sample.

The second checkpoint at the Torres winery: all grape deliveries pass this "toll both".

A small part of the Torres winery. Most of the vinification is done outdoors in gigantic temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.

The third step in grape reception at the Torres winery: This is where grapes are tipped down to be transported to the fermentation tanks. Behind it you can see the control centre.

A closer look at a few of the stainless steel fermentation tanks at Torres. Notice the man to give you a sense of scale.

Grapes have been delivered to the Torres Winery. They will be transported to the press and then to the fermentation tanks
041006-144-4451.jpg
This is another tank with just recently picked and delivered grapes. This is the Xarel-Lo grape variety and the grapes are machine picked, which you can tell from the abundance of juice and the absence of stalks.
041006-144-4452.jpg
More grapes delivered to the Torres winery. This is hand picked Moscatel grapes. You can see how the bunches are still more or less intact and that the stalks are still there. The archimedes screws will push the grapes fisrt to destemming and then to the press

The top of the fermentation tanks. You can see the pipes where grape must is delivered, the lids ... and a man telephoning

This is the a row of presses. Above to the right (you cannot see it on the picture) you have the grape reception area. Immediately to the left you have the fermentation tanks

A winery worker at the bottom of the fermentation tanks. The "dial" is probably to shift grape juice/must from one tank to another

A very long corridor. Probably a few hundred meters long

Wooden barrels in the Torres celllar. The code shows what it is: the batch identity: 13063 (upper left); the grape variety: Garnacha (GN) (u.r.); number of barrels in the batch: 28 (l.r.); the date the barrel was cleaned (l.r.) (Don't know why there are two dates. Maybe one is cleaning and the other is filling)
