Costers del Siurana/Clos de l'Obac Carles Pastrana at Costers del Siurana in Gratallops was, together
with Rene Barbier and Alvaro Palacios, one of the first to start making
quality wine and realising the region's potential for quality wine in Priorato in the early
1980s. He made his first red wine, Clos de l'Obac, in 1989 and a couple of years
later he continued with other cuvees: the white wines Miserere and Kyrie and the
red, sweet wine Dolc de l'Obac that comes from a one-hectare vineyard with a
unique micro climate. The grapes ripen more and better there and are used
to make this unusual sweet red wine.

Carles Pastrana demonstrates how you do "pigeage" - push down the grapes, grape skins and solid matter in the fermenting juice. Just like in big tanks, but by hand

The barrels used for fermentation are made by the cooperage Magenan

The tool used to the the pigeage. Not quite sure what it can be used for otherwise...

The main fermentaiton hall at Costers del Siurana
winery. Many of the tanks are full of fermentating must. One of the tansk is just being "pumped over" (remontage). In the middle you can see the pump. The pipe is connecte at the bottom of the tank and there is a vertical stainless steel tube that goes up to the top of the tank

This is the outside of the same tank. You might be able to see the lid inside the tank. This makes it possible to easier avoid oxidation when storing the wine in a tank

Carles Pastrana is a very energetic man that rarely keeps still
