Rhône: Domaine E. Guigal in Ampuis (Côte Rôtie)

All images © Copyright WineTastings Britt Karlsson, BKWine, Per Karlsson. Images are for sale. Contact info @ bkwine.com.
   E Guigal, Ampuis
The Guigals make a third of all wine from Côte Rôtie! They own no more than 12 hectares but buy a lot of grapes from smaller growers. Thus Guigal has almost become synonymous with Côte Rôtie wine. Etienne Guigal, who died in 1988, and his son Marcel, the current head of the company has contributed enormously to make the appellation well known for wines of outstanding quality.

Not everything is large scale. Here are some demijohns in wicker baskets Large storage wine vats in the background and smaller wine barrels with 'bond à coté' (the bung hole to the side) 'Bond à coté' supposedly reduces evaporation and is also thought to slow down the oxidation of the wine Large fermentation or storage barrels (muids?) This wine barrel was created for a special anniversary and has a sculptured wooden end depicting Etienne Guigal

Barrels everywhere   A little Bacchus Brand new wine barrels (pièces) waiting to be filled. Guigal has its own cooper! Old barrels. Waiting to be sold?

A small section of the bottling line A few of the stainless steel fermenting vats The temperature control panel for all the vats - 50 of them in total! Look at the top of these vats: the two in the middle each have four black columns sticking up. That is the pneumatic pigeage system, to "submerge the cap" during fermentation A closer look at the pigeage system

A view of the wine vats from above. It looks almost industrial As does the control panel for the vinification... ...Here the wine maker can control ever stage in the wine making during harvest... ...And each piece of equipment is indicated: conquet, egrappoir-fouloir, pompe vendange etc One floor down you have the wine barrel aging cellar

Tasting one of the white Guigal wines, with a glass on top of a barrel The "tasting room" The vaulted ceiling is specially designed to withstand the weight above. We're standing just under the 50 fermentation vats! More wine barrels E. Guigal. The head office is located at the Chateau d'Ampuis that Guigal bought some years ago, at the other end of Ampuis

Another of the "sites" in Ampuis is this house just across the street from Guigal, covered in ceramic
