Savennières is a small
appellation in the Loire valley close to Angers. It covers around 300
hectares of which less than half is planted. It makes exclusively white
wine from the Chenin Blanc grape. The predominant style is bone dry whites
with high acidity, very elegant and minerally. With age they change
character and often become almost honeyed on the nose and with a still
very fresh acidity. There is also some sweet wine made. (There are also
some other grapes grown but they do not have the right to the
appellation.)
This is one of the smaller and lesser known
appellations and certainly one of the most undervalued ones. Here you can
find some of the world's great white wines at astonishingly low prices
(especially the dry ones).
Coulée de Serrant is owned by Nicolas Joly
who is famous for his almost militant position of "biodynamie" (organic
growing according to Rudolf Steiner)
