Château de Pressac, Saint-Emilion

The chateau looks like a real medieval castle and it actually dates back to the 15th century and has a very interesting historical background. This is where the peace treaty was signed in 1453 that marked the end of the Hundred Years' War between England and France and that led to that Bordeaux returned to France. Jean-François Quenin bought the chateau in 1997 and he has the ambition to bring its wines up to the level of the greats of Saint Emilion. He willingly explains how the soil in this particular area is very similar to the lime stone soil closer to the village where the most famous chateaux have their vines. The vineyard covers 30 hectares, which is big for being in Saint Emilion. In addition to Merlot and Cabernet Franc (the predominant grapes in St Emilion) he has also planted some Malbec. Again, this links back to history since Malbec is actually called Pressac in St Emilion. Jean-Francois has also introduced another rarely used grape variety in Bordeaux: Carmenere.

Druvan kallas nämligen Pressac i Saint-Emilion!
