One-day trip to Champagne – Saturday 22 November
The opportunity to stock up for the end-of-year festivities!
You can never get enough of champagne, or of Champagne!
So even if you have already been to Champagne it will be an
experience to come back!
And
if you have never been in Champagne? Then don’t hesitate to join this one-day
trip. It will give you the opportunity not only to taste a number of the most
interesting and best value champagnes but it will also be an opportunity to meet
the people behind the wines and learn more about how it is made – few wines need
so much work and effort to produce as champagne and once you understand how it
is made you will also understand why it can never be cheap.
We will visit three producers, have a champagne lunch, and visit some of the
best known Grand Cru villages.
Program:
 | 08.15 Departure from Paris - Gare de Lyon (Autocars Chambon-Gros) |
 | 10.30 Champagne Philipponnat in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ
Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, just east of Aÿ, is famous for its exceptional terroir and
exposition. It is considered one of the best in Champagne and has one of the
few “single vineyard” designations: Clos des Goisses, where the vines grow on
an exceptionally steep south facing slope overlooking the Marne river. All
five hectares belong to Philipponnat, a house founded in 1910 by Pierre
Philipponnat. They own 17 ha in total and also buy in grapes to achieve a
total production of 500 000 bottles. We will meet with Charles Philipponnat
himself, who is the current head of the house. |
 | 12.30 Lunch at Champagne André Jacquart, Mesnil-sur-Oger
A. Jacquart (not to be confused with ”Jacquart” without the ”A”) is a
family run house well on its way to becoming one of the top producers in Côte
des Blancs and is today one of the best value producers. They have 11 ha in Le
Mesnil one of the leading villages in the Côte des Blanc in Champagne. Our
hostess will be Chantal Jacquart, the daughter of André. |
 | 14.30 Champagne Bonnaire, Cramant
For the afternoon visit we will stay in the rolling hills of the Côte des
Blancs and go to the pretty village of Cramant. The biggest grower in the
village is Bonnaire, producing some 200 000 bottles. Being in the Côte des
Blancs focus is Blanc de Blancs, champagne made only from Chardonnay. Bonnaire
was founded in 1932 and is today run by Jean-Louis Bonnaire. |
